Friends, we've all been there...
My life is perfect... Or so it should be?
I have so many incredible things in my life. I've got a super hot prince charming for a boyfriend, I've got so many super cool hipster friends, I just got a raise and I'm the best employee at my job, I've made all A's in every class this semester, I won a huge dance competition, or maybe scored the winning shot at the big basketball game, my room is clean, and my car smells so good that every time someone gets it in they ask me what it is. My life is perfect right?
That's what we want to believe...
We want to believe that with every ounce of our being, but we can't help feeling a little empty, and a little depleted.
But that's not possible. My life is great so of course I'm happy... right?
So we push it back. We pretend it isn't there and we keep seeking a happiness that we believe can be found in all of these accomplishments and perfect relationships we've acquired. It works for a little while, but all of the sudden that dark pit of emptiness swallows us whole once again, leaving our soul desperate for something, anything to grab a hold of. We reach out for our relationships, but they aren't strong enough to pull us up. We try to grab hold of our accomplishments, they can't save us either. We're left dangling at the edge of this dark pit that has suddenly swallowed us whole and it seems as though nothing is strong enough to free us from this darkness.
Friends, you are right. Nothing on this Earth can save us from the emptiness we feel when we place our happiness, and our value on situations, relationships, and accomplishments.
It seems as though we are hopelessly stuck, but friends, after hanging on the edge of this pit for far too long, I've discovered the secret.
Jesus.
Sweet, sweet, Jesus.
“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1
We were created to need Jesus. We weren't created to just ask Him for things when we want to ace a test or do good at a dance competition. We were created to need Him with our entire being every second of everyday. Just as the scripture says, we are dry without Him, we are empty without Him, no matter what Earthly possessions and achievements we may have. We were created with a longing in our heart, a thirst for something, and as hard as we try to quench that thirst with things of this Earth, the only thing that can really fill us up is Jesus.
"You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water." Psalm 63:1
Is it not obvious by now?
Throughout the entire Bible it shows proof that when you look toward worldly possessions and accomplishments you will be left empty. Just because we are alive a few thousand years later doesn't mean that this has changed. The answer has always been Jesus and the answer will always be Jesus. Jesus says to the Samaritan woman...
"Everyone who drinks this water (of the world) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14
If you are feeling empty and depleted today I challenge you to look to Jesus to quench your thirst. Stop looking for approval and fulfillment in the things of this world because I promise you as soon as you start to seek fulfillment in Jesus instead of these Earthly things, everything will feel right again. You won't need to find happiness in anything else because you will be so filled with God's love that you won't need anything else.
